I had the same problem with Quaker State 4X4 synthetic blend 10W40 in my Savage. It lost the full capacity save a cup or so in roughly an hour during a rally in Mississppi. It was like the oil just vaporized away. i switched to Castrol 20W50 year round, and except for the regular marking of its territory, no more oil loss (my Savage leaks like an AMF Shovelhead). I now only lose about a cup or so between oil changes. I have not tried motorcycle specific oils, as I've never had problems with car oil in my bikes, and I've had a ton of bikes. HD, Indian, British, Puch, Honda, Suzuki, Exelsior, Henderson, single or multi-cylinder, air or liquid cooled, they all liked Castrol, except the HDs that took 70 weight, they liked Cessna oil.
Hope some of this helps ( or at least makes sense).
